Yes, yes I am. Between my IOS app project, finishing my Master’s degree, Hurricane Sandy and a business trip last weekend I’ve been a little slow to post this last week or so. So sorry folks!
Now to cut to the chase, a lot has happened in the book world in the last week.
- Penguin and Random House are merging– Yes to many this is hard to miss news. Penguin Random House as it is being called will be a joint venture between Bertelsmann (owner of Random House) and Pearson (owner of Penguin). The ultimate hope? That in combining two well-respected and prestigious names (Penguin Classics anyone?) they’ll have more leverage when dealing with moguls like Amazon and Apple. The merger also bodes well for eBooks as Penguin Random House may now have more resources for creating more developed eBooks. Bertelsmann and Pearson have committed to the merger for at least 3 years.
- Sony Releases a Reader app– For many this news is far less substantial. But for those of us who had an eReader early and preferred Sony to Kindle, this is excellent news. When one of Sony’s software updates broke (and I subsequently spent an hour talking with Sony’s IT) it corrupted my software and I sadly have never gotten it to work quite right ever since. With no other way to read those books I’d already bought they’ve been sitting in my “library” for years. Now however they are all accessible again on Apple iPhones and iPads.
- East Coast Bookstores are Rallying– For those of you who receive Shelf Awareness this will be no surprise but many damaged bookstores are in the process of getting up and running again. If you’re looking for a way to help you can visit your favorite East Coast bookstore’s web site and see if they’ve installed a donations link.
- Bertelsmann (Random House) takes full possession of Random House Mondadori– This seemed relevant to include in light of news bullet no.1. The joint venture between Mondadori, a Barcelona based publisher, and Random House is now owned completely by Random House though books will continue to be published under Mondadori imprints.
I’ll be back Wednesday with a delicious recipe for Savory Pumpkin Ravioli!
